Yep, usually it starts with a weird 3-4 and then slowly gets worse from there.
My 2020 Mustang 10R80 has always had a peculiar 3-4 shift behavior under light to moderate throttle. The RPMS fluctuate all through 4th gear and the power is uneven. 5th gear kinda similar but other gears seem normal. I asked the dealer if there were any TSBs for the transmission when they were doing the brake fluid warning recall but they didn’t respond. I don’t think they looked. Is there a test for the CDF drum?

Update. 30 April 2024.
Picked up my wife’s Mustang yesterday. Dealer had it two weeks. They put in a new 10R80 with upgraded parts from the factory. The cost was around $8300. My extended warranty through Safeguard paid for all but $159.
The new transmission is far superior to what the car came with. It shifts so smooth and flawlessly. The old transmission had a clunk when it went from 4th to 5th. This transmission smoothly blips to every gear like butter. It even feels better going from park to drive. This is supposedly the same transmission in the 2024 mustangs. Maybe it will last longer than 49k miles. Ford gave me a 3 year/36k mile warranty on the transmission.

I’m so jealous. This is how a transmission should operate. Enjoy.

come on now. Where's your Ford Proud? They couldn't be seen licensing GM who perfected this trans back in '18 so in the finest "not invented here" they did a miserably bad job of it.

I bought the Z4 because of the ZF 8 speed and B58 engine and I'm feeling real good about my decision, now.

I'm a ZF8 fanboy too after a year with my new Jeep.

Hoping a tuner can make my truck's A10 bearable, it's out of warranty in July anyway so might as well try.

Unleashed Tuning massaged my 2020 F150 a bit. Had it tuned (3.5TT) within 4 months of driving off the showroom floor. Really pissed paddle shifters don't come on the truck.

Glad they got the car sorted out. I can understand your wife’s hesitance to drive the car again though. My wife had a rear axle bearing lock up on the interstate in her wrangler. She said it felt like driving through a puddle of oil. She got it pulled over without further incident though. I had to drive it for a little after that to show her it was fixed and after that she was more than happy to have it back. The jeep is the first vehicle she has ever liked enough to spend money on so I’m glad she got over the fear rather quickly.

Another update. When the car is first driven in the morning or after sitting for a few hours the transmission does several things. It slipped while going from 4th to 5th. Just a slight slip. Doesn’t do it after warming up.

Then is started noticing when cold or sitting for awhile it will skip from 1st to 3rd and sometimes 3rd to 5th.

went by ford and told mechanic. He said leave it with him. He was confident that the fluid level was down right when he had it. Mentioned cdf hub again. Losing all faith in Ford 10R80. Brand new transmission with upgraded parts.

I'm putting 800hp through mine, no issues so far
There's always issues with the 10R80.. you just haven't noticed them.

I think you’re right. I did read on the svt forum that the 10R80 can skip shift when cold. I can live with that. I just didn’t like the slip from 4th to 5th. That doesn’t seem normal.

Its not normal (well, normal for a FORD). In a Camaro 10L80 , no slips at all.

Skipping gears is normal, it does not always shift sequentially 1 thru 10. Slipping is different

I have a 2016 challenger SRT 392 and I can assure you that ZF eight automatic transmission is absolutely flawless.
