Eek. Any track days on this wheel during the summer? Maybe heavy duty track use + Florida summer = more heat than the material can handle?

Hard to see if it’s cosmetic or structural. I imagine that you’re not going to voluntarily disclose the track usage ?

Sorry to hear Tom. Hope you can get this addressed by Ford. One track day?

The benefits of carbon wheels are obvious, but man, are there prices to pay otherwise. They seem so damn delicate, and prone to so many things (not to mention the phobia of street driving) happening that have been documented in many other threads, since the GT350R. So many things happening to them that you never had to worry about, with regular aluminum.

Aluminum has its issues too. An aluminum wheel has a finite life like anything else. The problem I see with aluminum (like any metal) is fatigue. So many cycles and like anything else, it gives. What caused this? I don't know. I certainly wouldn't sell the CF wheel short over a single instance of something that is not structural (that I know of).
True, and it can also flex somewhat, upon aggressive turn-in, messing with camber to a small degree, etc.

But man, fingers crossed that Ford does you right here! They have to.

Really....... wow, was the CF damaged?
What I gathered from the comments of the guy that posted it is that there was a lot cracks and "delamination" in the hubs. Didnt say anything about the CF specifically, but said it looked like concrete textured wheels. There wasn't any impact either. It also occurred in Florida so I thought it was your for a second.

Hope you get it resolved Tom. Do you think you will just switch over to a different set for next year?

That sucks man. Hopefully it’s an easy fix. There have been a few similar reports

I like to disassemble things.
In October of '19, Car and Driver had an article entitled "Why the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500's Carbon Wheels Are Superior to the GT350R's" and it stuck in my head.

C&D said:
Carbon Revolution upsized the GT350R's 19-inch wheels and rated them for higher loads without any weight penalty. Carbon Revolution says both GT350R and GT500 wheels weigh the same 17 pounds. Had it applied the same construction technique, co-founder Brett Gass said, each 20-inch wheel would be five pounds heavier.
I remember a slight cringe as I read that. They're thinner. The failure I see in those photos is rather compelling as is what Tom witnessed. To refresh, read the article to see more about what CR did to the GT500 wheel versus what they were doing before.

I believe the thing that made me go hmm was how they made a 20" CF wheel the same weight as the 19" wheel.

Tapping the barrel with your finger, it sounds lighter, thinner.

With all of that said, those brakes on the GT500 are huge. I didnt think to measure the heat off of those rotors, but you take a heavier car, make it go faster, and then try to stop it over and over..... the heat must be insane.

Interesting. It seems to be heat related. I find it ironic that the protective heat coating is failing it's purpose.

I would like to understand the application process. Is the coating sprayed on by hand or is it applied by machine to an engineered layer spec?

My wheels have splatters of overspray on the inner lip which leads me to believe it is applied manually. If so, I can see how a "thin spot" may be cause for concern.

Thanks for the heads up Tom. Hopefully, we find out more info on our wheels in the near future. They are to expensive for this type of crap to happen.
