I'm starting to plan for the arrival of my new car and am trying to decide whether to drive home from the dealer, about 350 interstate miles, or trailer the car. What are the break in requirements? How many miles have to be on the car till I can really put the hammer down?

Thanks,

Joe

Drive it! I think the manual says 500 miles before extended bouts of acceleration. 1000 miles before tracking it. I downloaded a pdf manual from Ford, along with the Shelby supplement.

+1 to drive it, unless you're worried about paint chips. And I've read to not keep it at the same rpm for too long.

Keep the car out if 6th gear until you hit 500 miles. That will allow you to vary the RPM and make sure you don't lug the motor

Other than that your fine

Just put a little over 475 miles on the car in two days. Followed instructions as best I could for the first 150 or so miles. A bit more difficult beyond that, as it's less precise. I guess time will tell whether I got it right or not.

"Your vehicle requires a break-in period. Drive your new vehicle at least 100 mi (160 km) before performing extended wide open throttle maneuvers and at least 1,000 mi (1,600 km) before performance or competition conditions. Note: Vary your speed frequently in order
to give the moving parts a chance to break in."

I agree. I tried to keep mine out of 6th.

Drive it! Have fun! Take a bunch of off and on ramps so you get varying speed with some full throttle blasts and do some engine braking with zero throttle.
