To be fair, a mustang will get a considerable amount more abuse than a Prius would. Can a Prius even do line-lock?

So where do you think "Fix Or Repair Daily" came from? I just watch one of those Brit shows where they compared 2015 GT & Ecoboost with a '65 Mustang and asked what he would keep, he said the '65 because all the foibles and problems are part of the DNA of Mustang ownership! It's part of the charm......

Where did they get such a crazy high number from at 75k miles?

that's what I was wondering. 5/50,000 power train warranty, but then from 50->75, the car needs $10k of maintenance ? I would need to see more data.

I'd lIke to see the data on these numbers. I call BS.
For example, Volkswagen is listed as cheaper then Ford. No way.
VW parts are way more expensive on average.

I call shinanagins! Most mustang owners do a lot of their own work. Unless your getting 1500$ rip me off brake jobs and blowing engines, over 10,000$ by 75K miles is silly. But $1-3,000 in mods before 3K is reasonable.

It's hard to compare. I mean, their chart has one of the costs as "Check Engine Light is on" but in a VW you don't really have a problem until the light goes out! :D

But seriously, I think it depends what vehicle and trim you are comparing. Even within the Mustangs, think about the cost of maintaining a base V6 versus a GT PP. Cost of Pirellis every 10-15k versus whatever is on the v6 every 25-30k miles? How much is the difference in brake pads?

And you know they are assuming you are paying labor for everything. I found my VW's pretty cheap to main. Oil and filter is $40 every 10k miles, throw in a $40 fuel filter every other time if it's a diesel. That "expensive" DSG service is a little over $100 I think if you do it yourself. My TDI seemed like it always had a problem, but on actual repairs I spent maybe $500 in the first 150k miles doing the work myself when I probably would have paid $5000 if I let the dealership do that work.

I guess I'm kind of making your point for you on the VW, but what I'm trying to say is you have to take the whole thing with a grain of salt because they are going to make a lot of assumptions.

ETA: Brakes? I put 160k miles on one VW and 65k on another and never touched the brakes except for changing the fluid once. Although I did check and I could buy OEM-quality rotors and pads for about $225-250 and go another 160k.

This article is nonsense.

I have kept very good records on all fuel and maintenance for my car. Other than a JLT catch can, it is bone stock.

I am currently just over 36,000 miles in 1 year 8 months of ownership.

TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP
Total cost of fuel and Maintenance is: $6,757.87
Running cost per day is: $10.94

FUEL
Total cost of fuel: $5,035.61
Running cost per day is $8.15

SERVICE
Service costs in Parts $1,412.68
(Tires, Oil changes, Air Filter, Cabin Air filter)
Running cost per day is: $2.29
I do my own service or it is covered under warranty.

EXPENSES
Merchandise for car: 309.58
(floor and trunk mats)

None of these figures include insurance.

This just proves that you cannot believe everything you read.

Bologna needing new Pirellis every 10-15k miles and that includes the rears.

Who the hell is https://www.yourmechanic.com and what was their sample size to even collect this data? Also were these cost based on THEIR prices? It seems like they are a business who will come and perform maintenance. I am assuming they are collecting information from their customers to create this information.

According to ford's manual, other then tires, oil, air filter, cabin filter, and brakes. you really shouldn't have any major maintenance costs till 100K and at that your just replacing all the fluids.

So gt's with 20 =$1200/set of tires ($1800+ if your silly enough to goto a dealer for tires)
V6/base gt 18's = 600$/set
oil? 40-80$ depending on if you pay to have it done
Brakes, 250-300$ if you do them yourself, 600-800 dealer rip off
Rotate tires, 30-40 bucks
air filters? 50-300 if you got a cai and it's good forever

and at 100K tranny/diff/coolant flush, but most of us will do that every 25K.

The only thing i can figure is they expect mustang drivers with 20's to destroy a set of tires every summer? and then pay outrageous dealer costs.

Tires waste is per driver preference, but other then that? i don't expect to pay squat for maintenance on this car. I've owned 4 mustangs and they all have been fairly cheap mass produced parts. But imports/bmws high end stuff is piratically required to goto the dealer every 6-8 months to be considered certified and that costs? 500-1000$/year?! for basic stuff.

All I have to say is it pays to learn how to get your hand dirty and turn a wrench vs. sitting drinking free coffee at the dealer ship. And if you do the work yourself you know exactly how will it's done.

WAIT a second i know how they came up with these numbers!? It's that 3 hour oil change... case of beer 30$, oil and filter 40$, DWI from the test drive $8,000, Insurance hike and divorce. wait that's like $50,000 plus half my stuff, i think their numbers are low for total cost of a mustang?!?! :headbonk::cheers:

The problem is, the numbers given by that website don't seem to wash with actual owner experience.

Seriously, if Stangs required 10.2k in out of pocket repairs the first 75,00 mile (first 5-6 years) no one would buy one.
