Hello all,

While it's been a good run with my 2015 GT, I'm in the market for a GT350 (2017+ model years).

While I'm researching on the side, I was hoping some of you scholars could help me out with a few questions below.
  1. Any noteworthy (under-the-radar) changes between 2017 > 2018 model years?
  2. Have there been significant changes to the Voodoo engine since initial production started?
  3. I see a large amount of lemon-law cars floating about online, anything specific this could be related to (oil consumption)? From what I've seen, oil consumption appears to be hit or miss on various cars.
Thank you in advanced for your time and help.

Regards,

Nathan

I am in the market as well...
1. No real changes, except a 2018 might get you a bit more stretch on the factory warranty
2. 2019 model year added some significant changes to the voodoo Engine, but 2016-18 are pretty much the same engine.
3. If it comes from CA it could be everything from a blown engine to paint problems... CA seems to cater to the lemon law. Do your research, look at the CarFax and/or get the VIN and call a Ford Service Dept for details on a specific car

1 - 2017 Ford changed the filter from spin on to cartridge (late 2017). There were apparently issues with spin on filters backing off if not torqued down adequately.

You are correct, oil consumption seems to be hit or miss. Mine is fine, virtually zero at 13,000 miles.

Good catch on the oil filter. That is why Ford sent out that supplement to all early 2016-17 owners with the oil filter wrench and the statement about oil consumption.
I think you can "convert" the old style filter to cartridge with an adapter. Haven't confirmed that 100%

It's been discussed and accepted that the 18's got new ring/piston packs. Also that R motors differ slightly from Non-R motors in the valve train lash adjusters area.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, greatly appreciated. The piston rings are definitely something to consider, sounds like overall there hasn't been a significant amount of changes prior to the 2019 model years.

2020 GT350R has had a pretty noticeable rework on the engine as well as the suspension. Something to look into. The price reflects it though. With that being said, I have zero regrets about my '16 Track Pack car and feel zero need to get a new model. 200+ autocross runs, several track days, almost 18,000 street miles.

Do these changes differ from the engines already in the 19 350's were you referencing that? Just wondering if I missed more engine changes for the R in the press release.

The engine changes are were made for '19 and carry over for 20. There's another thread on it, but the info out there seems to support that all engines produced now are the R variant (GT350, GT350R and replacement engines) and have the block improvements made for the GT500
