Woelflick Racing at the 24h Nurburgring 2016

Green hell at its best - from hail to flush

Team head Stephan Woelflick and his team from Quiddelbach, Germany, decided mid-2015 to tackle a new racing project. For quite some time, they have been dreaming about starting with the new Ford Mustang at the Nurburgring's famous race around the clock. With support from its long-term partner Montaplast, they managed to get their hands on a series model and to convert it into a race car. The main changes included an upgrade of the suspension, brakes and gearbox. The first roll-out at the 6h qualification race in April was successful and the team had to manage expectations for the challenging race ahead.
The practice sessions on Thursday and Friday went smoothly and the driver used the time to work on a final set-up. Yellow flags and speed limit (code 60) prevented a top time in the last, dry practice sesssion. A time of 9:55 though was good for P7 in class (98 overall) and grid position in the second starting group. Into the race, Stephan Woelflick managed to stay clear from the early heat and to quickly gain a few positions. Despite relatively mild temperatures into the longer weekend, the weather forecast predicted heavy rain and everybody was alert to the dark clouds on the horizon. The storm arrived violently and hit the area between "Flugplatz" and "Adenauer Forst" with huge hailstones and a flush of rain. Fortunately for the team, they had switched to rain tyres early and escaped the chaos. Many other cars still on slick tyres became early victims and left the track a battlefield. This brought out the red flag and the stewards rightly decided to halt the race. Re-start took place two hours later behind the safety car, as the conditions were stilly extremely wet and visibility low.

Our Ford Mustang "Sally" run smoothly through the night and we held P2 in class SP8 and 66 overall after half-time. Two hours before the finish, the driver reported gearbox problems which turned out a broken differential. This was most unfortunate as we had just taken over the lead in the class and 52 overall. In an enormous effort and regardless the boiling hot body parts, our mechanics managed to fit a replacement and get the car back out after 65 minutes. In the final turns, we recorded a fastest lap of 9:44 and entertained the numerous fans around the Nordschleife with the V8 sound of our muscle car. Despite the small flaw, Woelflick Racing recorded yet another race finish and ended up with P5 in class and 66 overall.

Our special thanks go to our entire team for the tremendous effort in preparing the car and throughout the week-end. Despite the strenuous and seemingly endless race, every single member worked zealously and with exemplary team spirit. We are extremely proud to count on you team!

We are also hugely grateful to our partner Montaplast, without this venture would not have been possible. Thanks also to our smaller supporters, ie. Motorcraft, KW, Castrol, Recaro, Bridgestone, Asch Motorsport, Plastic4Performance, Hub Motorsport, Fritz Motorsport and Autoaufkleber24 – every single one contributed to the success and is essential. Thousand thanks indeed!

Racing Regards From Nürburgring Stephan
