I find myself revving the engine to either warn other drivers of my location or to prevent an accident. I blip it real quick to 3k just enough so they'll hear the noise, but not enough to sound like I'm being aggressive. I figure it's a bit nicer to rev the engine to make somewhere aware of a situation than to honk. Anyone else do this or am I being rude?

Being a motorcycle rider I do it when riding and also when driving yep. I love hearing the overrun on the downshift so that's always happening too. :D

i think in the case of trying to avoid an accident, which ends up as an accident, you stating you revved the engine as opposed to blowing your horn might not be the thing to do.

I do. I rev and if it doesnt work I lay on the horn. Most of the time a friendly blip of the throttle gets the other folk's attention and we move on.

Revving means "Look at me, I'm cool"

Honking means "Pay attention, dumbass"

Can't be pretty serious if you have time to rev the engine, honking is much, much quicker.
I concur.

I do this all the time if I'm at a light and the person ahead of me doesn't go or trying to draw attention for whatever reason. In the case of trying to avoid an accident I would stick to the horn though, there's a reason all cars still have a horn.

But yes, I rev all the time for reasons that most other would simply honk.

Back when I drove a Taurus, I would lightly rev the engine whenever I encountered kids that were playing on the street. Mind you, I'd only do this from afar and not to any obnoxious degree. It was more to let them know I was there and to give them enough time to casually wrap up their last play.

At red lights, if the person in front of me doesn't move after the light turns green, I'll let my car creep forward. 9 times outta 10, that's enough to catch their attention.

The only time I use my horn is to immediately prevent a collision. A primary example being when somebody tries to merge into your lane/into you! That said, perhaps I should try mvfjet's approach! :D

Motorcycle guy here so I rev and I honk. Whatever it takes to survive out there. Lots of wackos. I could care less what anybody thinks of what I do.

FWIW, honking the horn on a motorcycle is useless.
