Hello everyone,

As most of you probably know the 2022 intake seems to be much more restrictive then the 2021s and earlier.

As such, I am planning on removing the charcoal filter and the filter holder along with the plastic grid in the intake tube, then drop in a K&N to replace the stock air filter.

Have any of you done this yet and can share your experience?

thanks,
Rob

Let me clarify.

I'm looking for feedback from someone who has removed the charcoal filer AND plastic grid inside tube and then reinstalled the 22 intake back on the car without any other modifications or tune.

Were there any drive-ability issues, codes or was it a positive experience?

thanks.

let’s please keep this as a GT thread with no MACH 1 input as there are major differences. the thread linked above got very confusing

To answer your question…NOBODY has documented that they have removed BOTH the Charcoal Filter, it’s grid holder as well as the GRID INSIDE the Intake Tube (Grid is inside an INSERT into the tube).

I have attempted to get an answer about the Tubes Inside Diameter WITH the insert. I wanted to know if the inside diameter of the 2021 Tube (which has no insert with the Grid) is the same as the inside diameter of the 2022 Tube WITH THE INSERT INSTALLED. Meaning if I installed a 2021 Tube would that be the same amount of air flow as a 2022 Tube with the insert installed. The MAF sensors are the same part number for 2021 and 2022 for informational purposes.

I have found 2, yes 2 members from the thread linked above who are on STOCK tunes that have installed a 2021 LID and had no CEL or issues present. I imagine this would produce the same effect as removing the 2022 Charcoal Filter, it’s Plastic Retaining Grid, AND the Plastic Grid Inside the Tune Insert.

That is the route I planned to take just in case I chose to re install the OEM 2022 equipment should I need to. Of course that not a free mod like cutting your 2022 Lid would be….

Here are clips from the thread.

Yes, I pulled the charcoal filter and holder with no drivability problems. No I have not pulled the grid from the MAF. I expect that would cause problems as it is in there for a reason and I expect it is far less a restriction than the filter. Dyno in the above mentioned thread seems to support that as well if you can get through the reading.

Not to contradict your opinion. If two members have installed the 2021 and prior Lids and Tube with no Plastic Grid in the tube on a 2022, is that not conclusive that removing the grid would not cause an issue? I’m just trying to understand. Thanks!

Far from proven fact, but I thought I read that the MAF was slightly differently sized between the two and that the grid was added to prevent errant readings due to turbulence through the MAF anyway. Perhaps that turbulence was caused by the charcoal filter but regardless, if the entire setup costs only 10 HP you can see where a vast majority if not all of it would be caused by the filter. The grid should offer no more resistance than a grille would in front of the radiator.

Yea, the MAF sensors are the same part number for 21/22.

I’ve asked but nobody can answer, but my thought is that the OEM 21ID is the same as the OEM 22ID. Meaning the 22 would be larger if the Insert Sleeve was removed.

Removed the charcoal filter and put a K&N drop in on my 23. No major difference, I think it runs a little better and maybe has a little more low end power. No issues with stock tune. Also have steeda h pipe

Found this:

Good video of the impact that a Charcoal filter can have.

I wonder if the grid was added because the charcoal filter caused some airflow issues, as there is no grid in a 21 or earlier intake tube.

I replaced my 22 air box lid with a used 18-21 lid and did a drop in. The car fired up perfect the very 1st time and have had no problems in 5k miles now. I measured the 22 MAF opening to be a few mm smaller overall, but it must be within the PCM's margin of error, because the part vendors are now selling the 18-21 CAI (no tune required) for the 22s now. This also makes it almost a certainty that the 21 and 22 have the same tune. Its becoming more clear as vendors update, that everything intake related that works on a 21, works on 22s. The extra filter and its grate, plus the MAF grid is a big restriction when added together.

I did the below to my '22 GT:
- Removed hydrocarbon trap charcoal filter.
- Removed hydrocarbon trap charcoal filter retaining structure.
- Cut flow straightening grid off insert tube.
- Still running OEM paper air filter.

Car has been running fine with no CEL or other issues.

I'm happy to measure the ID of the insert tube for comparison to the same dimension on a '18-'21 part.

chuckhammer, Thanks for your update. It is very helpful info. I made an offer on Ebay for a 2020 Lid and Complete Assembly but ultimately decided that I did not want to spend $150 for 10hp that I probably would not feel. I may take the same approach that you did.
